There are lots of freeware programs that deserve to be kept an eye on but usually they don't get attention because of their bigger competition that advertises all over the internet leaving them to the bottom. I'll try to make a list for this programs as they might get you interested in what they can do for free. The order is aleatory.
AIMP Audio Player - The best audio player there is. Say goodbye to Winamp because this is way better.
uTorrent - A great bittorrent client.
GIMP - Oftenly compared to Adobe Photoshop except it's free.
Mozilla Firefox - The best and safest internet explorer you'll find.
Daemon Tools - Great utility for mounting virtual images.
Codestuff Starter - A must have utility. It keeps track of the programs that run at startup.
Open Office - A great replacement for Microsoft Office.
Audacity - Very nice audio editor. Record, multi-tracks, quite a few plugins, easy to use.
Sumatra PDF - A lightweight PDF viewer. Loads fast, works great.
Avast! - Free antivirus software. And also pretty good even compared to expensive ones.
GMail Drive - Works just like a normal hdd expect it's virtual(on google's servers). Quite amazing.
Phun - Virtual sandbox. Just draw things that move, add motors, goes as far as your imagination.
VLC Media Player - Very good media player for watching movies mostly. Usually has all the codecs.
